The Art of Street Photography: Techniques, Tips, and the Sirenic Streets of Auckland

Updated: Sep 28, 2023

In photography, few genres capture the raw beauty of life like street photography. It's an art form that thrives on the artful depiction of candid moments unfolding in public spaces, offering glimpses into the pulse of urban life. With its roots tracing back to the early days of photography, street photography truly came into its own in the mid-20th century, thanks to influential photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Garry Winogrand. Their mastery of capturing the "decisive moment" and freezing fleeting yet meaningful instants in time contributed to the genre's growth and recognition.

For those venturing into street photography for the first time, this article explores an array of techniques (though not exhaustive) and tips to elevate your craft. It all starts with composition – the key to a compelling street photograph. Pay attention to leading lines, symmetry, and framing elements to create visually striking images. Beyond composition, use your lens to tell a story. Observe your surroundings keenly, waiting for that perfect moment when the elements align to convey a compelling narrative.

Street photography often presents challenging lighting conditions, but embrace the shadows, experiment with silhouettes, and use light creatively to add mood and drama to your photographs. When photographing people in public spaces, respect their privacy. To maintain the human element unrecognisable, explore techniques like capturing subjects in profile, using shadows, or employing slow shutter speeds to create motion blur. Always remember the legal and ethical considerations; be aware of the privacy rights of individuals and seek permission when photographing recognisable faces.

For your street photography adventures, consider a versatile camera with a prime lens. The compact and inconspicuous setup will allow you to move freely and discreetly through the city, ready to capture those candid moments that unfold in the blink of an eye. Personally, I use my big “work” camera with a big heavy zoom on it which is certainly not the most discreet (especially as I am 6ft3 or 192cm tall) and it’s a pain to carry around for hours at a time, however my old Panasonic GH4 recently lost the ability to auto-focus and I have more pressing financial matters to be able to afford an extra camera for wandering the streets of Auckland.
